How much does a brick wall cost in Los Angeles?

HomeGuide puts a brick fence 3 to 6 feet tall at $60 to $240 per linear foot. Measured by wall face, HomeGuide lists $20 to $40 per square foot. Angi’s 2026 national average for a brick wall is $5,000, at $10 to $45 per square foot for most homeowners. For a solid wall two bricks thick, Homewyse’s May 2026 figure starts at $65.35 to $84.16 per square foot.

These are national figures. Your brick wall installation cost in Los Angeles comes from measuring the wall on site. Our page on the brick fences and pilaster walls we build shows the work itself.

This guide covers new brick walls and fences in the yard. Brick on the house itself, such as veneer over a block or stucco wall, is a different job, covered under brick veneer on the house.

What does each type of brick wall cost?

Each guide prices its own unit. Every row names its source, and all figures are national.

BIA 29A, the Brick Industry Association’s garden wall guide, sets foundations in undisturbed earth. Homewyse’s figure assumes favorable site conditions and digging up to 1 foot below grade. It also leaves out permit and inspection fees.

What moves the price of a brick wall?

Angi calls wall size the biggest factor in the cost to build a brick wall. Height counts twice, since HomeGuide says taller brick walls need a double-brick thickness and structural reinforcement. In the City of LA, height also decides the permit.

Wall type sets how much brick goes in. BIA 29A calls the pier and panel wall economical because its panels are thin, and it adapts easily to uneven ground. Another route is a block core with a brick face, with brick only where it shows.

For garden walls, Angi’s 2026 guide puts natural clay brick at around $25 to $35 per square foot. It calls concrete block the more budget-friendly choice, at around $10 to $20. Our block wall prices by height cover the block side.

The footing is the part you never see. Angi’s 2026 guide prices concrete footings at $15 to $55 per linear foot. BIA 29A calls for reinforcing where needed, particularly in active soils. City of LA plan check treats local soil as expansive unless an approved soils report says otherwise.

BIA 29A calls for grade SW brick and Type S mortar in a garden wall, with every joint completely filled. Angi lists salvaged or reclaimed brick as a way to save. BIA 29A says used brick should stay out of garden walls unless it meets grade SW. Used brick generally does not, it adds.

The cap is its own line on a quote. BIA 29A wants it to overhang each face by at least 1/2 inch, with a drip. It also recommends through-wall flashing directly beneath the cap.

Brick pillar cost adds up one pilaster at a time. Ornamental brick columns run $500 to $2,000 each in Angi’s 2026 guide, and HomeGuide lists $500 to $1,800 per pillar. Angi adds that wrought iron between the columns pushes the total higher. HomeGuide says posts, wrought iron, gates and stone caps all raise a brick fence price.

An old wall to tear out adds demolition and haul-off before the new footing goes in. We repaired one customer’s brick wall after other companies said it had to be demolished. If yours might be saved, start with prices for repointing and brick repair.

Slope and site set the rest. On a yard with a significant slope, Angi budgets an extra $400 to $6,000 or more for leveling.

When does a brick fence need a permit in Los Angeles?

In the City of Los Angeles, a masonry or concrete fence up to 3.5 feet needs no building permit (LAMC 91.106.2). Over that height, the city building code requires one, with one exception.

LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080 sets out that exception: a partly masonry fence no taller than 6 feet. Its pilasters stay within 6 feet tall and 1 foot 4 inches wide. Their centers sit 6 feet apart or more.

Between pilasters, masonry can rise to 3 feet 6 inches. Above it, the fence has to be open wrought iron grillwork, wood or another lightweight material. The exemption never covers a swimming pool barrier, and zoning height limits apply either way.

LADBS bulletin P/ZC 2023-002 sets those limits. A front yard fence in an R zone stops at 3.5 feet, or 8 feet with City Planning approval. Side and rear fences can reach 8 feet on a lot 40 feet wide or more outside a Hillside Area. Narrower lots and hillside lots stop at 6 feet.

Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena and the other nearby cities set their own rules. Altadena and La Crescenta-Montrose are unincorporated LA County. Where a permit applies, it is handled as part of the job. The paperwork is filed for you where the agency allows it.

How is the cost of a shared brick fence split?

California Civil Code 841 presumes adjoining landowners share an equal benefit from a fence dividing their properties. Unless they agree otherwise in writing, each is presumed equally responsible for its reasonable costs. That covers construction, maintenance and necessary replacement of the fence.

A landowner who plans to spend on the fence gives each affected adjoining landowner 30 days of written notice first. Under the statute, the notice describes the problem, the proposed fix and the estimated costs. It also gives the proposed cost sharing approach and a proposed timeline.

That equal split can be overcome by a preponderance of the evidence that equal responsibility would be unjust. Among the factors a court considers is how far the costs come from one landowner’s personal aesthetic or architectural preferences. We suggest a written agreement with your neighbor that sets the plan and the split.

Know the line first. When the property line is uncertain, Angi calls a $350 to $700 land survey worth it before a brick fence.

How a brick wall quote is put together

A quote starts on site. We measure the run and the height you want. We also check the slope, the access and any old wall coming out.

The written quote lists each part: the footing, the brick and mortar, the pilasters and panels, the caps and the permit path. Homewyse says its own estimate is not a substitute for written quotes from trade professionals.

A customer who wanted a brick fence demolished and rebuilt says we came out the same day to measure and quote. Your brick wall quote is free and in writing, and we give it on site.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a brick wall cost per linear foot?
In HomeGuide's national figures, brick fence cost runs $60 to $240 per linear foot for walls 3 to 6 feet tall. A garden wall 1 to 2 feet tall runs $15 to $40 per linear foot. A privacy wall 6 to 8 feet tall runs $210 to $360. These are national ranges, so a Los Angeles price comes from measuring the actual wall.
How much does a brick wall cost per square foot?
Most homeowners spend $10 to $45 per square foot on a brick wall, Angi's 2026 guide says. Its national average job is $5,000. HomeGuide puts brick fences at $20 to $40 per square foot of wall face. A double-width wall up to 4 feet on a new footing starts at $65.35 to $84.16 per square foot in Homewyse's May 2026 figures.
How much do brick pillars cost?
Angi's 2026 guide prices an ornamental brick column at $500 to $2,000, and a structural one at $2,000 to $7,000 or more. HomeGuide's range is $500 to $1,800 per pillar, set by size and by whether the column is ornamental or structural. Panels of wrought iron or wood between the pillars add to the total.
How much does a brick and wrought iron fence cost?
A brick and wrought iron fence is priced in parts: pilasters, a low wall between them and iron panels. Angi puts ornamental brick columns at $500 to $2,000 each and says iron between them raises the total. HomeGuide says posts, gates and stone caps raise it too. Built to LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080, it needs no City of LA building permit up to 6 feet, if zoning allows.
Can a brick fence be taller than 3.5 feet without a permit in Los Angeles?
Yes, in the City of Los Angeles, if it follows the pilaster design in LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080. Pilasters max out at 6 feet tall and 1 foot 4 inches wide, with centers at least 6 feet apart. Solid masonry between them stops at 3 feet 6 inches, with open iron or wood above. A pool barrier never qualifies, and zoning height limits still apply.
Does my neighbor have to pay for half of a brick fence?
California Civil Code 841 presumes adjoining landowners are equally responsible for the reasonable costs of a fence dividing their properties. A written agreement can set a different split. The landowner planning the work gives 30 days of written notice first. A court can order less than an equal share, or none, when an equal split would be unjust. We suggest a written agreement with your neighbor.
