One Masonry Crew for All of Tujunga

A masonry contractor in Tujunga works in arroyo stone country. City Planning describes arroyo stone as locally sourced, rounded river stones, collected here from washes and streams. Bolton Hall was built of rocks from the local hillsides and the Tujunga Wash, and dedicated in August 1913. Masons like George Harris trained on that job, then built stone houses through the late 1910s and 1920s. Many Craftsman homes in the area carry arroyo stone foundations, porch piers and chimneys. Our job here is to keep that stone standing and match it in new work.

Tujunga sits between the Verdugo Hills and the San Gabriel Mountains, and plenty of homes here sit on sloped lots. We repair river rock and fieldstone walls, matched to the original stone and mortar. We also lay new river rock and fieldstone work for garden walls, planters and veneer. On a slope we build retaining walls that terrace a steep yard. Block and brick walls, steps, paver and concrete driveways and fire pits are part of the work too. Every job starts with a free quote, given on site and in writing.

Can an old river rock wall be saved?

Often it can. We start by finding what failed: water behind the wall, tree roots or a footing that gave way. Stone wall restoration matched to the original then rebuilds only the failed part. The old stone goes back in wherever it survives. New mortar is matched to the old in color and joint shape. On one failed historic river rock wall, we rebuilt with roughly 95 percent of the original stone. Another customer had us restore a very old stone wall and repoint its stone paths at a circa 1930 property.

Some stone buildings here are city landmarks. The city declared Bolton Hall Historic-Cultural Monument No. 2 in 1962. Blarney Castle, the most monumental of the cubic stone houses unique to Tujunga, is a designated monument too. Work on a designated monument goes to City Planning's Office of Historic Resources. Its staff review and approve the work before alteration permits are issued. That review follows the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. On any old stone wall, we keep what survives and match what we add.

Building walls on a Tujunga hillside lot

Tujunga was its own city from 1925 until it joined Los Angeles in 1932. City of LA rules have applied ever since. Bolton Hall even housed the city's Department of Building and Safety after the annexation. The retaining wall line is 4 feet, from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. A wall that size or shorter needs no permit, unless it supports sloping earth or a surcharge. On ground steeper than 1 in 5, a 20 percent slope, a retaining wall of any height needs a permit. Our guide covers why water pushes on hillside walls.

Fence heights follow LADBS bulletin P/ZC 2023-002. On a lot in a Hillside Area, side and rear yard fences stop at 6 feet. The 8 foot allowance only covers lots at least 40 feet wide outside a Hillside Area. A solid masonry or concrete fence over 3.5 feet also needs a building permit. So a solid 6 foot block wall along a side or rear yard is a permit job. LADBS plan check wants its footing designed for expansive soil, unless a soils report says otherwise. The permit is handled as part of the job, with paperwork filed for the homeowner where the city allows it.

Matching new walls and steps to Tujunga's arroyo stone

Tujunga's old stonework sets the pattern for anything new. McGroarty Park, a 1920s neighborhood park in Tujunga, has arroyo stone features throughout, stone walls among them. Sunland Park has arroyo stone retaining walls of its own. We build new garden walls, planters and veneer in rounded river stone that matches the old work. On a Craftsman house, a new pier or low wall can pick up the arroyo stone already on the porch. Steps and walks that climb the grade can take a stone border to tie them in.

A visit starts with the stone already on the lot. We look at the size, color and roundness of the rock and how the old mortar joints were finished. In the late 1910s and 1920s, Tujunga's lack of building rules encouraged residents to help build their own stone homes. So we check how an old wall was built before we plan anything against it. If a wall has started to move, fixing a retaining wall that bows or cracks may come first. The free written quote then sets out the scope and any permit the work needs.

Call (424) 653-0453

Do you work in Tujunga and Sunland?
Yes. We take masonry work across Tujunga and Sunland, including Haines Canyon and the blocks around Commerce Avenue. The two towns grew into one community. Both are part of the City of Los Angeles, so City of LA permit rules apply in each. Quotes are free, written and given on site.
Can you match old river rock?
Yes, and the closest match is the original stone itself. When part of a wall fails, we save the sound rock and set it back in the rebuild. Where more is needed, we choose rounded river stone close in size and color. The mortar is matched too, so the new section reads as part of the same wall.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall on a Tujunga hillside lot?
Yes, if the wall is over 4 feet or sits on a slope steeper than 20 percent. Tujunga follows City of LA rules. The 4 feet run from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. A shorter wall also needs a permit when it holds back sloping earth or a surcharge. Where the city requires engineering, a licensed engineer designs the wall.
How tall can a wall or fence be on a hillside lot?
On a lot in a Hillside Area, side and rear yard fences can go up to 6 feet. The 8 foot allowance applies only to lots at least 40 feet wide outside a Hillside Area. Front yard fences in R zones stop at 3.5 feet without City Planning approval. A solid masonry or concrete fence over 3.5 feet also needs a building permit.
How do quotes work?
Quotes are free, and we give them on site and in writing. We look at the stone, the slope and where water runs across the lot, then measure the work. The written quote sets out the scope, the materials and any permit the job needs.
