Brick Walls and Fences Built for Los Angeles Yards

We build brick walls and brick fences across Los Angeles, including Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Brentwood. That covers brick garden walls and privacy walls along a property line. Low front-yard walls often pair brick pilasters with open wrought iron or wood. Some homeowners want a block wall faced in brick instead. Others want an old brick fence torn out and rebuilt, with new brick matched to the house. Planters and mailbox columns belong with the rest of our brick masonry.

Most calls start with an old brick fence that leans or has cracked through. Others start with a bare property line, or a low wall to line a brick front walk and steps. One customer had us out the same day to measure and quote tearing down and rebuilding a brick fence. The first visit is free and on site. We look at the soil and the brick on the house, and ask where the property line runs. Then the wall goes into a written quote, height and footing included.

Which Kind of Brick Wall Fits Your Yard?

A solid brick wall gives full privacy and shows brick on both faces. The Brick Industry Association's Technical Notes 29A says a straight garden wall needs enough thickness to stay stable. A block wall faced in brick has a reinforced block core with brick on the street side. The yard side can stay plain. For a wall with no brick at all, see our plain block property walls.

A brick and wrought iron fence sets open iron or wood panels between brick pilasters. It keeps the view open, which suits a front yard. Technical Notes 29A also describes a pier and panel wall: thin 4 inch brick panels braced by masonry piers. Footings go only under the piers, and 29A calls the design economical since the panels are thin. In the City of LA, the pilaster style has a permit-free version.

How Tall Can a Brick Fence Be in Los Angeles Without a Permit?

In the City of Los Angeles, a masonry fence over 3.5 feet needs a building permit. LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080 lays out one design that skips the permit up to 6 feet. Each brick pilaster tops out at 6 feet tall and 1 foot 4 inches wide. They stand at least 6 feet apart, center to center. Solid brick between them stops at 3 feet 6 inches, with open wrought iron or wood above. The design does not cover a swimming pool barrier.

Zoning limits apply whether or not a permit is needed. In R zones, a front yard fence stops at 3.5 feet without City Planning approval. Side and rear yards allow 8 feet on lots 40 feet wide or more outside a Hillside Area. Other lots stop at 6 feet. Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena and the other cities run their own rules. Our full LA fence permit guide goes deeper. Where a permit applies, it is handled as part of the job. The paperwork is filed for you where the agency allows it.

What Goes Into a Brick Wall That Lasts on LA Clay?

Brick wall construction starts below ground. Technical Notes 29A sets garden wall footings in undisturbed soil, reinforced where needed, especially in active soils. City of LA plan check wants footings designed for expansive soil, unless an approved soils report says otherwise. Where the city requires engineering, a licensed engineer designs the wall and we build to the approved plans. Soil higher on one side makes it one of our walls that hold back a slope.

Above ground, 29A asks for brick that meets grade SW, since garden walls face the extremes of weather. Its recommended mortar is Type S, a portland cement and hydrated lime mix. Every head, bed and collar joint gets filled completely. The cap projects at least 1/2 inch past both faces, with a drip that keeps water off the brick. 29A also recommends through-wall flashing right under the cap. Caps can be brick or natural stone. Our stone caps and veneer can match stone already on the house.

Rebuilding an Old Brick Fence

A rebuild starts with demolition and haul-off of the old wall. A new footing goes into undisturbed soil. New brick is chosen to match the house, or the look of the old fence, in size and color. The mortar color is matched too. For a new wall, 29A advises against used or salvaged brick unless it meets grade SW. It adds that used brick generally does not.

Some old fences can be saved instead. One customer had us repair a brick wall after other companies said it had to be demolished. Another had us repair a low brick wall while extending a brick patio. When a wall can be saved, the work moves to repairing the brick wall you have. The site visit settles repair or rebuild, and the written quote spells it out.

Property Lines, Shared Fences and What Moves the Price

Before any brick fence installation, the property line has to be known. The LADBS fence bulletin warns against assuming the inside edge of the sidewalk is the property line. Angi calls a survey worthwhile when the line is uncertain. On a fence dividing two properties, California Civil Code 841 presumes the adjoining landowners equally responsible for its reasonable costs. A landowner who plans to spend on it must give each adjoining landowner 30 days of written notice. We suggest a written agreement with your neighbor.

HomeGuide's national range for a brick fence 3 to 6 feet tall is $60 to $240 per linear foot. Angi's 2026 guide lists ornamental brick columns at $500 to $2,000 each. Homewyse prices a double-width wall up to 4 feet tall, on a new footing. Its May 2026 national average starts at $65.35 to $84.16 per square foot. Wall size moves the price most. Posts, wrought iron, stone caps and an old wall to tear out add to it. Your brick wall installation quote is free and in writing.

How much does a brick fence cost per foot?
HomeGuide puts a brick fence at $60 to $240 per linear foot for walls 3 to 6 feet tall. Per square foot of wall, Angi's 2026 guide lists $15 to $40. Pilasters and caps push the number up. Our brick wall and fence price breakdown walks through each case. Your quote is free and in writing.
Do I need a permit for a brick wall in Los Angeles?
In the City of Los Angeles, yes, once a masonry fence tops 3.5 feet. LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080 exempts one pilaster design with open iron or wood above, up to 6 feet. Other cities set their own rules. Where a permit applies, it is handled as part of the job.
How tall can a brick fence be in my front yard?
In the City of Los Angeles, 3.5 feet in an R-zone front yard. Going to 8 feet takes City Planning approval. That zoning limit holds with or without a building permit, so it caps a pilaster fence too. Other cities set their own limits.
Can you put wrought iron between brick pillars?
Yes, brick pillars with open wrought iron or wood between them make a classic brick and wrought iron fence. We build the brick pilasters and the low wall between them, caps included. In the City of LA, one built to LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-080 needs no building permit up to 6 feet, where zoning allows that height.
Who pays for a brick fence on the property line?
Under California Civil Code 841, adjoining landowners are presumed equally responsible for a dividing fence's reasonable costs. A written agreement can set a different split. Before spending on the fence, a landowner must give each affected adjoining landowner 30 days of written notice. We suggest settling the plan in writing with your neighbor.
