Finished white stucco retaining wall along a Los Angeles property line

How much does a retaining wall cost in Los Angeles?

Angi’s 2026 Los Angeles data puts the average retaining wall project at about $7,140, with most homeowners paying between $2,674 and $11,842. Per linear foot, published LA ranges run from about $60 for short segmental garden walls to $600 or more for tall engineered or stone-faced hillside walls. That spread is honest: a knee-high planter wall and a permitted hillside structure are different projects that happen to share a name.

This guide breaks down where your wall is likely to land and why. When you want a real number for your yard, our retaining wall quotes are free, written, and based on the actual site.

What does a retaining wall cost per linear foot?

Wall type and height set the baseline. Here is how 2026 California pricing guides break out installed cost per linear foot for walls under about 4 feet of retained height:

Wall typeUnder 4 ft retained4 to 6 ft retained
Segmental block (interlocking)$60 to $120 per ft$120 to $200 per ft
CMU block, stucco finished$150 to $250 per ft$250 to $400 per ft
Poured concrete$200 to $350 per ft$350 to $500 per ft
Stone-faced engineered wall$250 to $450 per ft$450 to $650 per ft

A Los Angeles contractor guide published in March 2026 frames the same market as $200 to $600 per linear foot across its projects, with a 50-foot wall at 4 feet tall running $10,000 to $20,000. For a sanity check against materials: Angi lists brick retaining walls at $25 to $30 per square face foot, concrete at $35 to $60, and natural stone anywhere from $25 to $125.

Multiply honestly. A modest 30-foot backyard wall at 3 feet tall in stuccoed block sits comfortably in the mid four figures. A 60-foot hillside wall at 6 feet, engineered and drained, can pass $30,000 before the finish conversation starts.

What makes the price go up or down?

Height is the big one. Cost does not climb linearly with height, it jumps. A wall over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing needs engineered plans and a permit in the City of LA, which adds design cost and inspection time, and the wall itself needs a bigger footing, more steel and more block per foot of length.

What sits above the wall matters as much as height. A wall holding back a flat garden bed is carrying soil. A wall with a driveway, pool or slope above it is carrying all of that too, which is called a surcharge. Surcharged walls need engineering regardless of height, and they cost more to build because they are doing more work. Our guide to LA retaining wall permits covers the exact triggers.

Drainage is non-negotiable. Gravel backfill, drain pipe and weep holes are what keep soil pressure from turning into wall failure. Skipping drainage is how LA ended up with so many leaning walls for us to rebuild. Budget for it on every wall, every time.

Engineering and permits, when required. For walls that cross the thresholds, 2026 California guides list geotechnical reports at $1,500 to $5,000 (LA residential reports average about $2,700), structural engineering at $2,000 to $8,000, and city permit fees at $500 to $2,500. Short garden walls with nothing above them usually avoid this entire column.

Access and demolition. A wall a bobcat can reach prices differently than one where material moves by wheelbarrow down a hillside path. If an old failed wall has to come out first, demolition and haul-off join the quote.

Which wall type should you pick?

For most LA residential work, stucco-finished CMU block is the workhorse: strong, code-friendly, and finished to match the house. Segmental systems make sense for shorter landscape terracing on a budget. Poured concrete earns its cost on taller engineered walls and modern architectural looks. Stone facing is the premium move, and stone veneer over a block core gets the look without full-stone structural cost.

The honest answer depends on the job the wall has to do. A contractor who asks about what is behind and above the wall before talking materials is quoting the structure. One who quotes a price per foot over the phone is guessing with your hillside.

What does a failing wall cost to fix?

If an existing wall is leaning, bulging or cracking in stair-steps, the price question changes: reinforcement and refinishing where the core is sound, rebuild from the footing where it is not. Repair pricing tracks the same drivers as new construction, minus what can be saved. Every wet season a moving wall waits, the answer slides toward rebuild, so an early assessment is the cheapest thing on this page.

Averages set expectations; sites set prices. We look at the wall, the slope, the water and the access, flag any permit or engineering questions on the spot, and put the price in writing with a timeline. The visit and the quote are free anywhere in the Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena and Greater LA area, and if a smaller fix does the job, you will hear that first.
