Hollywood's masonry story starts in the hills. Hollywoodland was sold in the 1920s on granite — stone retaining walls, gates and stairways built by old-world masons that still hold Beachwood Canyon together a century later — and the pattern repeats across the Hollywood Hills: Whitley Heights' Mediterranean terraces, Outpost Estates' stone entries, Laurel Canyon's stacked hillside lots. Down the hill, the flats carry Spanish courtyards, brick fourplexes and garden walls from the same golden era.

Hollywood Hills lots are small, steep and stacked, which makes their walls structural in the fullest sense - holding streets above, pads below and neighbors on both sides. The Hills sit inside City of LA hillside rules, where retaining walls need permits at any height, and the walls we build run the full correct system: engineered footings, reinforced grouted block, drainage that daylights, finishes in stucco or stone that suit the street.
The historic stonework deserves its own respect. Hollywoodland’s granite walls and stair-streets and Whitley Heights’ terraces were built by masons who knew their trade, and when sections fail - roots, water, time - the repair should reuse the original stone and disappear into the old coursing. That reuse-first standard is exactly how we approach historic restoration, and some of our proudest work.
The flats and lower streets carry the other half of the work: Spanish revival courtyards with low walls and tile details, brick steps and planters on the older blocks, block walls replacing tired fences, and driveways squeezed onto hillside frontages that need every foot to work. Matching material and mortar to 1920s architecture is the difference between a repair that vanishes and one that bothers the street forever.
And then there is the reason people put up with the parking: the view. Terraces, seat walls and fire features on Hollywood view lots turn small outdoor spaces into the best room of the house. We have built exactly that - including a rooftop fire feature with glass rail where the skyline does the work - and small-lot outdoor rooms are a specialty we enjoy.
