Sherman Oaks is two masonry towns wearing one name. North of Ventura Boulevard, the Valley flats run classic post-war streets — ranch houses with concrete driveways, block property walls, brick planters and backyards built for summer. The hillside streets off Ventura live on retaining walls — holding driveways, terracing backyards into usable flats, keeping slopes where they belong. Many of those walls went in with the houses fifty and sixty years ago, built to older standards without modern drainage, and every wet winter finds more of them leaning, bowing or shedding stucco. We build and rebuild them the correct way: engineered where height and load demand it, reinforced and grouted, drained so storm water passes through the weeps instead of pushing on the wall.
Sherman Oaks sits inside the City of Los Angeles hillside rules, where retaining walls need permits regardless of height — a stricter rulebook than the flats, and one we build to as a matter of course. The finish layer is where the structure disappears: smooth stucco, stone veneer or clean architectural block, chosen against the house in daylight.
