The foothills teach one lesson over and over: a retaining wall is a water project wearing a masonry costume. Walls here fail from hydrostatic pressure long before they fail from age - built without drainage, they lean, crack and bow when the slope saturates. Ours go in the boring, correct way: engineered footing, reinforced and grouted block, gravel backfill, drainage that actually daylights, and then the finish everyone sees.
This community also knows what the mountains can send down - the debris-basin system above these streets exists for a reason - so we build with respect for water paths, keep walls and grades working with the drainage picture rather than against it, and flag anything on your lot that deserves an engineer's eyes before block is laid. Taller walls need engineering and permits by code, and we say so upfront rather than after.
