Los Angeles is a masonry city that forgot it for a few decades and is remembering fast. The housing stock tells the story: 1920s Spanish and Craftsman houses with brick porches, garden walls and chimney-anchored facades; mid-century blocks with planters and block walls; hillside neighborhoods terraced on retaining walls from Mount Washington to Silver Lake. Nearly all of it is seventy to a hundred years old now, which means nearly all of it needs a mason - to repair what settled, extend what works, and build the outdoor rooms LA actually lives in.

A big share of LA masonry calls are really matching problems: a 1928 porch that needs three courses rebuilt without the seam showing, a garden wall the last owner extended badly, mortar joints gone soft on a street of houses the same age. That is craft work - matching brick, color and joint profile - and it is some of our favorite. Repairs done right disappear; repairs done cheap advertise themselves forever.
We are equally straight about what old-brick work is not: decorative and garden masonry, walls, veneer and repairs are our lane, and structural seismic retrofitting of unreinforced masonry buildings is an engineering trade with its own specialists. If your project crosses that line, we will say so plainly and point you right.
The everyday workhorses of LA masonry are less romantic and more essential: reinforced block walls where wood fences keep failing, retaining walls holding the hillside neighborhoods in place, driveways and steps that survive the sun. LA's slopes make walls a way of life - and its fire seasons are making non-combustible block, stone and concrete the default answer near structures, which suits us fine, because that has always been the material list.
And then there is the reason people love these yards: the outdoor kitchens and fire features, patios and seat walls that turn a lot into a place. We build those as one coordinated project - walls, grades, surfaces and the island - so the finished yard agrees with itself.
