The Palisades fire took a staggering toll on this community, and rebuilding it is now the work of years. We come to that work the way neighbors should: useful, honest, and respectful of what Palisadians are putting back. Masonry has a real part in the rebuild — anyone who walked the Alphabet Streets or Marquez Knolls afterward saw that the block walls, stone gateposts and chimneys were often what remained standing — and it has a real part in what comes next, because the rules now lean hard toward non-combustible ground around homes.

The City of Los Angeles has worked to make rebuilding navigable, and the process is real: the LA One-Stop Rebuilding Center on Sawtelle Boulevard puts ten city departments under one roof, a dedicated Palisades Inspections and Permitting Support Center operates right in the neighborhood on Marquez Avenue, and the Mayor's emergency orders expedite like-for-like rebuilds within 110 percent of the original footprint and height — thirty-day reviews, five-day permit clearances, and plan check and permit fees suspended for owners who held the property when the fire hit.

Surviving masonry gets assessed honestly — heat and movement can compromise mortar and reinforcement even when a wall looks fine, and we tell you which walls can be saved and matched and which should be rebuilt. California's Zone 0 direction calls for ember-resistant, non-combustible ground in the first five feet around structures, which makes block, stone, concrete and pavers the default materials where landscaping used to burn.
