A concrete patio is the working answer for most LA backyards: one clean pour, finished for the use, pitched just enough to drain away from the house. We form and pour patios on compacted base with control joints laid out so the normal hairline lands in a straight sawcut, and we finish them broom for grip, smooth trowel for a modern house, or with integral color and banding. Published LA guides start concrete patios around $8 per square foot, the lowest entry price of the three surfaces.
Covered patios start with us too. A pergola or a solid patio cover needs a slab and footings poured to the cover builder's plan, with post bases set where the drawings say and the slab pitched so the cover sheds water the right way. We pour that stage, the cover goes up, and the yard is ready for furniture. One of the patios on our work page is exactly that build: a fresh concrete floor under a new pergola with stone accents.
LA's expansive clay swells wet and shrinks dry, and a one-piece slab answers that movement by cracking. An interlocking paver patio answers it by flexing, but only over a real base: excavation to depth, base rock compacted in lifts, screeded bedding, edge restraint at every border and polymeric sand locking the joints. Pavers also give the patio its design range. Large-format planks read modern, running bond stretches a small yard, and a soldier-course border frames the field like trim. Seat walls faced in stone veneer rise from the same field, a fire pit sinks into it, and a paver pool deck runs the same pattern to the water. Flagstone is the patio for a yard with trees and curves. Each piece gets picked, fitted and cut so the joints stay tight, the thickness sorted so the surface walks flat, and the color blended so no single stone shouts. We set flagstone dry over compacted base where a garden feel is the goal, and mortared over a concrete slab where the patio carries a fire pit, a bench or daily traffic.
The finished flagstone patios in our work show the pairing that makes them: a curved concrete bench and a rectangular fire pit rising out of the stone field, a stucco seating wall wrapping the corner, a flagstone path leading out through the lawn. Add the fire pit or kitchen island and the patio stops being a surface and becomes where the evening happens.
